Summaries
The Optima 3300 RL ICP-OES
An application note from Perkin-Elmer discusses the analysis of wear metals and additive package elements in new and used oil, using the Optima 3300 RL simultaneous ICP-OES instrument. Instrumentation, methods and results are illustrated and discussed. Wear metals such as copper and iron may indicate engine wear, while the presence of boron, silicone or sodium may indicate contamination from dirt or antifreeze. Levels of additive elements are determined to monitor engine protection. Regular analysis of lubrication oils provides accurate information on the condition of both the oil and the engine.
